When is the right time to think about RFID implementation?

Many manufacturers have been asking this question for almost a decade and as RFID technology has progressed, the group of those now investigating for the first time is growing as well.  But before we discuss parts of this emerging discussion, let’s clarify our terms briefly.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a technology system based upon the transmission of data via electromagnetic waves, usually between a terminal or “reader” and a “tag” placed on an object we wish to track.  There is an endless array of objects, including products, people, and animals that we might wish to track, but a bar code label that can electronically communicate without line of sight is not too bad a definition for now.   The tags themselves either have battery power (or “Active”) such as those used in the PA Turnpikes EZ Pass system, or they are “Passive”, requiring external electromagnetic fields to power the tag’s transmission.  Passive tag examples are most commonly applied to consumer, low cost goods.  Active tags can cost from a few dollars to several hundred dollars depending upon the application and environment, while Passive tags are now available for under five cents each.

Choosing the right tags and readers, and the relevant cost analysis that goes with it is beyond the scope of this article.  But in brief here are a few of the strategic questions many organizations are now debating which form the background for their RFID investigation.
